A hostess who presided over one of the most important of the 17th-century French literary salons, Catherine de Vivonne, marquise de Rambouillet, was born in Paris. The salon that she established there, at the hôtel de Rambouillet, exerted a great influence on French literature and language for over a generation and was frequented by such leading writers and intellectuals as pierre corneille, molière, madeleine de scudéry, Mme de sévigné, jacques-bénigne bossuet, françois de malherbe, and others. Molière satirized Mme de Rambouillet's salons in Les Précieuses ridicules (1659).
